About AAM

Founded in 1906, the American Association of Museums (AAM) is the largest cultural organization representing the museum industry. We serve over 17,000 members including museum professionals, a wide variety of cultural and science institutions from historical societies to botanical gardens and art museums.

Director of Membership Development

The American Association of Museums, the largest U.S. organization dedicated to serving the nation's museums seeks a seasoned leader with membership development expertise to provide strategic direction and management to the Association’s membership recruitment,  retention and outreach efforts and to implement long-term growth strategies, programs and practices that will generate substantial income from membership dues.

Responsibilities: In collaboration with Member Services, develop a Member Programs Strategy for AAM.  Develop and implement a comprehensive membership acquisition and retention program to include direct mail campaigns, telemarketing, personal cultivation, promotional materials, website content and outreach initiatives. Build the member base of AAM and achieve stated revenue objectives for membership dues. Evaluate and seek on-going improvement in membership development campaigns. Work closely with AAM’s partner networks to identify and collaborate on membership development opportunities and volunteer efforts to benefit the field as a whole. 

Qualifications:  minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a direct marketing or development role, BA in Marketing or related field (graduate degree strongly preferred, particularly an MBA or equivalent experience), demonstrated competency in development and implementation of marketing plans/strategies, target audience analysis, research, promotion, distribution channels and program evaluation, ability to generate revenue and create new growth opportunities, proven project management skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, database management, supervisory experience, and proficiency in MS Office. Interest and experience in the museum field highly desirable. Travel required approximately 5-10% of time.  



Senior Editor

The American Association of Museums is seeking a Senior Editor to write, edit, assign and manage publishing projects, including the Museum, the association’s bimonthly magazine. The Editor will effectively oversee procedures for creating, printing and distributing this magazine and other communication projects, such as annual reports, and other publications that the department produces while cultivating professional relationships with current and potential authors from all disciplines.

Responsibilities: Collaborating with Marketing & Communication staff, working with subject matter experts, (internally and externally), soliciting articles, performing editorial changes, conducting research, coordinating and editing web content material, managing work and costs of freelance writers, performing administrative tasks such as registering publications for copyright and responding to inquiries, travel when necessary to conduct interviews and to the Association’s Annual Meeting, perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications: a BA degree in journalism or related field, (Masters degree preferred), minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience for a professional publication, outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, ability to work in a dynamic environment, proficiency in MS Office, knowledge of museums and the museum profession desirable, non-profit or association experience preferred. Salary is in the mid $40’s.

E-Communications Editor


The American Association of Museums is seeking an E-Communications Editor to effectively provide e-communications expertise to build a strategic e-communications platform for AAM. The Editor will write, edit and manage the design and development of the Association’s monthly e-newsletter, Aviso while managing e-calendars, editorials, website content and evaluating and implementing new social Medias to meet organizational goals. 

Responsibilities:  Collaborating with IT, Marketing & Communications teams and AAM’s networks, including volunteer networks, to achieve all e-communications objectives, identifying use of appropriate technologies, managing costs, messaging, internal and external electronic communications, writing and soliciting articles, compiling articles by AAM staff, performing project management duties, conducting online surveys and reviewing metrics, evaluating the use of blogs as it relates to AAM’s program needs, performing other duties as assigned by Supervisor or VP, Marketing and Communications.

Qualifications: - Ideal candidate will have a BA degree in journalism, communications or marketing, a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience writing, editing and proofreading for e-communication vehicles, including website content development. Proven track record of building and maintaining an e-communications platform for a nonprofit organization, proven skills as a copywriter, content editor, team oriented individual that can produce results in a fast-paced work environment, excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge of museums and the museum profession a plus.
